Ph.D. Sociology:

- Core Knowledge and Understanding:
- Illustrate a critical and wide-ranging understanding of classical and contemporary sociological theory, which involves an ability to outline the principal debates, weaknesses, and uses of alternative theoretical approaches.
- Demonstrate extensive understanding of sociological research methods, both qualitative and quantitative. Students should be able to critically analyze the strengths and limitations of varying methodological approaches.
- Have a good command of the history and evolution of sociology as a subject matter. This involves understanding major figures, intellectual currents, and institutional change.
- Acquire a wide and advanced knowledge base in one or more substantive fields of sociology (e.g., inequality, family, health, criminology). The knowledge base must be adequate to enable original research contributions.
- Appreciate the ethical implications of sociological investigation. The graduates should be capable of designing and executing research in an ethical and responsible way, following professional guidelines.
- Research Skills and Abilities:
- Develop new research questions and plan sound research projects to test such questions. This involves being able to spot gaps within the current literature and come up with creative research methods.
